Polished Concrete

A quality polished concrete floor involves more than just creating a smooth shiny finish. If a concrete floor is professionally polished it should have increased durability as well as beauty. In order to take an ordinary troweled finish floor to a high sheen polish finished floor the concrete must be ground with varying grits of diamond resin pads. This is normally achieved with a floor grinding machine known as a planetary grinder. This is a grinder with multiple heads spinning in different directions to aid the contractor in controlling the machine and creating an even finish. In conjunction with grinding the floor, chemicals are often used called concrete densifiers or hardeners. These products react with the soluble calcium compounds in the cement to create insoluble calcium silicates. This process fills in many of the pores in the concrete creating a surface with much greater hardness.

Really Polished Concrete

If a more decorative finish is desired the concrete can be dyed as part of the grinding process. Decorative patterns can also be cut into the surface to create tile effects, endless stain possibilities and much more. Another popular and beautiful look is that of exposed aggregate. If the concrete is ground more aggressively the aggregate stone in the concrete can be exposed. This is a look similar to a terrazzo floor.

Every year a manufacture will start selling a “new and improved” epoxy or coating product trying to compete with polished concrete and every year they are riddled with contractors who can figure out why the product is peeling off month after it was applied. There are a lot of companies that claim to offer services that will make your concrete floors look their best and last for decades. However, we have found that many of those in this business cannot deliver superior long?term results. This unfortunately casts a bad light on the industry as a whole.
